Stanley & Iris

“Some people need love spelled out for them.”

In a Connecticut factory town, Iris King (Jane Fonda) works the line at a bakery, newly widowed and raising two kids. Stanley Cox (Robert De Niro) cooks in the company cafeteria, and he has never learned to read. When he loses his job, Iris starts teaching him at her kitchen table each night, and Martin Ritt keeps the camera close and unhurried so that the room does most of the talking.
