Admiral James T. Kirk (William Shatner) has been kept on the ground, and when an unidentified cloud destroys three Klingon cruisers and heads for Earth, he takes back command of the newly refitted Enterprise. Spock (Leonard Nimoy) and Dr. McCoy (DeForest Kelley) join the crew to meet whatever is inside it. Robert Wise frames the Enterprise in long, slow passes, with clean corridors and wide viewscreens that give the ship room to be looked at.
