“It will take you a million light years from home. But will it bring you back?”

Daniel Jackson (James Spader), an Egyptologist whose theories nobody takes seriously, wants the chance to prove his reading of a giant ring-shaped device dug up in Egypt. He gets it when the military sends him through the ring with Colonel Jack O'Neil (Kurt Russell), to a desert world of humans who dress like ancient Egyptians and kneel before the god Ra (Jaye Davidson). Roland Emmerich stages the trip as a big, loud adventure, the kind built to fill a theater.
