Josiah Gray (Joel McCrea) rides into a small Western town after the Civil War with a Bible and a plan to give it a church. His wife Harriet (Ellen Drew) and an orphaned boy, John Kenyon (Dean Stockwell), come to depend on him there. Jacques Tourneur tells it as a grown man's memory, and the parson's faith meets its first real test against Jed Isbell (Alan Hale) and the people who have no wish to be saved.
