Brian Jackson (James McAvoy) grew up in seaside Essex watching University Challenge, and in 1985 he arrives at the University of Bristol on a scholarship, hoping to earn a seat on the team himself. He tries out, and he also falls hard for Alice (Alice Eve), a blonde with a long and well-known past. Tom Vaughan sets it against Thatcher's Britain and keeps the camera close on Brian, who is never quite as sure of himself as he sounds.
