Starting Over

“Phil Potter would like to straighten out his life... One way, or the other.”

Phil Potter (Burt Reynolds), freshly divorced from his ambitious singer wife, moves in with his brother Mickey (Charles Durning) and starts over as a single man in middle age. Soon he meets Marilyn Holmburg (Jill Clayburgh), a teacher, and the two begin a relationship, while Jessica (Candice Bergen) remains close by. Alan J. Pakula, working from a James L. Brooks screenplay, keeps the comedy and the hurt in the same scenes.
