“How's the State of the Union? It's GREAT!”

In 1948, Grant Matthews (Spencer Tracy), an industrialist, is urged by a circle of political backers to seek the Republican nomination for President. Frank Capra gathers them around his dinner tables and hotel suites, among them Kay Thorndyke (Angela Lansbury) and Jim Conover (Adolphe Menjou). The campaign needs his wife, Mary (Katharine Hepburn), to stand beside him in public, though their marriage has already come apart in private.
