In Biarritz in 1933, the swindler Serge Alexandre Stavisky (Jean-Paul Belmondo) uses his charm to buy his way, bribe by bribe, into the middle of French politics. Alain Resnais follows the schemes that bring in millions and the people who profit from them, among them Albert Borelli (François Périer) and Stavisky's wife, Arlette (Anny Duperey). Stavisky spends freely and smiles easily, a small-time crook who has talked his way into a room much larger than he is.
