Annelle Dupuy (Daryl Hannah) is new to a small Louisiana town, and the only job she can find is at Truvy Jones's (Dolly Parton) beauty salon. The women who gather in Truvy's chairs, M'Lynn (Sally Field), Clairee (Olympia Dukakis) and Ouiser (Shirley MacLaine) among them, take her in without being asked. Herbert Ross films their talk the way it happens, constant and overlapping, and the friendship between M'Lynn and Truvy holds the room.
