Brandon King (Ryan Phillippe) comes home to Texas after his tour in Iraq, a decorated sergeant ready to be done, until the Army orders him back to the field. Kimberly Peirce follows him and his fellow soldiers, among them Steve Shriver (Channing Tatum) and Tommy Burgess (Joseph Gordon-Levitt), as the war keeps working on them at home. The film is about what it means when a country can extend a soldier's service after he has already given it.
