Shirlee Kenyon (Dolly Parton) is a plainspoken small-town woman who dumps her boyfriend and leaves for Chicago. She lands a spot hosting a radio problem phone-in show almost by accident, and the station hires her on the spot, on the condition that she go by "Doctor." Barnet Kellman sets Shirlee against Jack Russell (James Woods), the reporter digging into her credentials, and the more time he spends near her, the more the story he's chasing could cost her.
