“M-G-M's Mighty Thrill-Romance for 1940 !”

A group of convicts breaks out of the penal colony on Devil's Island, and among them walks a calm stranger, Cambreau (Ian Hunter), whom no one can quite place. André Verne (Clark Gable) leads the escape and Julie (Joan Crawford) joins it, while Frank Borzage sends the men and their wary companion through a hard journey toward the sea. Cambreau keeps speaking of kindness and forgiveness to men who have been given little of either.
