Rose Maurrant (Sylvia Sidney) wants out of the cramped New York tenement block where her family lives, and Sam Kaplan (William Collier Jr.), the quiet neighbor boy, wants her to stay. The heat holds from one evening to the next afternoon, and the neighbors spend it on the stoops trading gossip and grudges. King Vidor never leaves that single set of house fronts, so every argument and every glance carries across the whole block.
