John Winger (Bill Murray) has lost his cab job and his girlfriend in the same week, with no plan for what comes next. So he talks his friend Russell Ziskey (Harold Ramis) into enlisting in the U.S. Army, where Sgt. Hulka (Warren Oates) is waiting. Ivan Reitman gives the barracks a loose, rowdy warmth, and John, who barely scrapes through basic training, turns into the man the platoon's misfits follow.
