“A cold-blooded thriller!”
Sheriff Tod Shaw (Sterling Hayden) runs a quiet small town, and his only trouble is Ellen Benson (Nancy Gates), a widow who won't have him because she can't stand guns. When the President's train is due to pass through, John Baron (Frank Sinatra), a hired assassin, takes over the Benson house as the best spot for an ambush. Lewis Allen keeps the family and the sheriff inside those rooms with Baron, whose calm manner is the first thing that frightens them.
