“Veronica Lake’s on the Take”

John Sullivan (Joel McCrea) is a Hollywood director who has made his name on comedies and now wants to film a serious picture about poverty. He decides he has to suffer first, so he puts on tramp's clothes and goes out on the road to find trouble. Preston Sturges sends him off with a young woman (Veronica Lake) tagging along, and Sullivan keeps pushing deeper, sure that hardship is what his picture is missing.
