Summer and Smoke

“In the heat of summer... the smoke of desire...”

Alma Winemiller (Geraldine Page) is a minister's daughter in a small Mississippi town in 1916, a nervous, high-minded young woman who lives by manners and by her own strict ideas of the soul. Across the yard lives John Buchanan Jr. (Laurence Harvey), a doctor's son known for his drinking and his women. Peter Glenville sets the two of them side by side, and everything Alma holds to is put at risk by a man who does not care about any of it.
