Nancy Carey (Hayley Mills) is the eldest daughter of a Boston widow, and when money runs short she follows her mother and siblings to a small town in Maine. Postmaster Osh Popham (Burl Ives) helps them into a run-down old house, assuring them its owner, Mr. Hamilton, is away in Europe and won't mind. James Neilson directs it as a musical with an early 1900s setting, and the songs carry the family through their first summer.
