“Where did our love go…”

Yu Hong (Hao Lei) leaves her village for a university in Beijing, and within months she is caught up in an affair with another student, Zhou Wei (Guo Xiaodong), that she cannot stop and cannot settle. Lou Ye follows the two of them through the dormitories and the campus into the spring of 1989, when the student protests reach their lives and start to pull them apart. The film is about how a love that feels like the whole world can outlast the world around it.
