Melissa (Naomi Watts) works the counter at a quickie-mart and lives with Richie (Matt Dillon), a paraplegic man she loves. They get by on her small hourly wage, and they are glad, not frightened, when she learns she is pregnant. Laurie Collyer builds the film around one couple's money trouble, and what holds up under it is the way Melissa and Richie keep reaching for each other.
