In 1996 Japan, a neighborhood supermarket called Honest Mart is losing customers to a bigger rival. Its owner, Goro Kobayashi (Masahiko Tsugawa), runs into Hanako Inoue (Nobuko Miyamoto), an old classmate with plenty of ideas for turning the store around. Jūzō Itami follows the two of them through the aisles and back rooms, where a friendship from their school days becomes a romance.
