“She's a lawyer who broke two laws of her profession... Never get involved with a juror and don't look for clues in dangerous places.”
Kathleen Riley (Cher) is a public defender in Washington, handed the case of Carl Anderson (Liam Neeson), a homeless veteran who is deaf and mute and the obvious suspect in a secretary's murder. The dead woman is tied to a Supreme Court judge who took his own life, and the more Kathleen reads, the less she trusts the charge. Peter Yates keeps the camera on the courtroom and the case files, and Carl sits at the defense table, silent, in the same clothes.
