A woman steps off a train in rural Minnesota in 1920, and the man she crossed the ocean to marry has never laid eyes on her. Inge Altenberg (Elizabeth Reaser) has come from Germany for Olaf Torvik (Tim Guinee), a farmer, and Ali Selim's debut follows how she and the neighbors size each other up. The film treats a marriage as a home two people have to build together on unfamiliar land.
