“When America marched off to war the women marched into the factory. From then on...nothing was the same.”

Why would a happily married woman in 1941 go to work at an aircraft plant against her husband's wishes? Kay Walsh (Goldie Hawn) does it after Jack (Ed Harris) enlists following Pearl Harbor. There she befriends Hazel Zanussi (Christine Lahti) and takes up with her trumpet-playing foreman, Lucky Lockhart (Kurt Russell). Jonathan Demme follows the war's long middle, as Kay's new job, her friendship and her marriage start pulling against each other.
