Sympathy for the Underdog
Masuo Gunji (Koji Tsuruta) comes out of prison in 1971 wanting his old Yokohama gang back, only to find a bigger Tokyo outfit has pushed it out of the city. He gathers his men and heads for Okinawa to start over by force. Kinji Fukasaku follows Gunji and Noburo Kudo (Noboru Andō) into nightlife streets where the film stock stays grainy and every face looks sweat-slicked and tired.
