“How am I insane?”

Toshizo Hijikata (Takeshi Kitano), the stern vice-commander of a samurai compound, wants his swordsmen trained hard and kept in line. Then Sozaburo Kano (Ryuhei Matsuda) joins the ranks, a young recruit so handsome that the men start quarreling over him in the training room. Nagisa Ōshima sets this at the end of the samurai era, and Hijikata has to decide whether to step in before the rivalry splits the compound.
