Petey Greene (Don Cheadle) is an ex-con in 1966 Washington, D.C., a loud, quick-talking man who has found his audience among the inmates he entertains from inside the prison. Dewey Hughes (Chiwetel Ejiofor), a buttoned-up radio programmer, hears a talent for talking straight to ordinary people in that voice and decides to put it on the air. Kasi Lemmons follows the two men as the city listens, and what rides on each broadcast is Petey's freedom and Dewey's career.
