Rocklin (John Wayne) rides into a western town to take a job as foreman on a ranch, only to learn the rancher who hired him has been murdered. Edwin L. Marin sets him among a cast that includes Arleta Harolday (Ella Raines), 'Judge' Garvey (Ward Bond) and Dave (Gabby Hayes), with the question of who wants the ranch pulling him in. The case is simple to state: a stranger has to protect land that was never his, for an owner who has no one else.
