“The threat. The search. The truth.”

A Texas businessman named Walter Lloyd (Gene Hackman) has spent years passing himself off as an ordinary husband and father, and his wife Donna (Gayle Hunnicutt) vanishes on a trip to Paris. Walter and his son Chris (Matt Dillon) fly out to find her, and it comes out that the KGB has taken her and that Walter's old life is the reason. Arthur Penn sends the two of them across Europe, with a wife's life and a father's secret both at risk.
