North Africa, the desert war of the Second World War, and four Free French commandos are stranded far from their lines. They take a German captain, Ludwig von Stegel (Hardy Krüger), prisoner, and the only way back is to cross the open sand together in a stolen car. Denys de La Patellière puts Théo Dumas (Lino Ventura) and the captive in the same vehicle, two soldiers with every reason to distrust each other and one wide, empty road to share.
