“One part woman. One part science.”

In a small laboratory in 2002, the bio-geneticist Rosetta Stone (Tilda Swinton) uses her own DNA to breed three self-replicating automatons named Ruby, Olive and Marinne. Lynn Hershman-Leeson, an artist who was teaching at UC Davis, gives Swinton all four parts, with Jeremy Davies and James Urbaniak circling the household. Underneath the code and the cloning, the film is about a woman who makes copies of herself in order to improve the world.
