A man is dead in the desert, and the story of how it happened depends on who tells it. Willie (Robert Blake), a Paiute, shot Lola's father during a confrontation over her, and Deputy Sheriff Cooper (Robert Redford) leads a posse after him in 1909. Abraham Polonsky follows the chase across the sun-bleached country, but it is Lola (Katharine Ross), riding at Willie's side, who holds the film together.
