Nobody at the roadside motel in rural Texas knows that the drunk who wakes up there, broke and without a plan, was once a country star. Mac Sledge (Robert Duvall) takes work from the young widow Rosa Lee (Tess Harper), who runs the place with her son, and he starts to stay. Bruce Beresford lets the days run quiet while Mac sits with his hands empty and a guitar nearby.
