In a rough Western town in 1955's frontier-style mining country, a gambler known only as Tennessee (John Payne) plays for high stakes and has no friends but an uneasy tie to Duchess (Rhonda Fleming), who runs the local bordello. A cowpoke (Ronald Reagan) saves him from murder, then waits on the steamboat for his fiancée Goldie (Coleen Gray). Allan Dwan sets the two men side by side, and the friendship between them is about to be tested.
