It is 2018, and the machines are winning. John Connor (Christian Bale) leads a human resistance that has to fight robots built to hunt and kill. Then Marcus Wright (Sam Worthington) walks out of the wreckage, a stranger who can't say where he came from, and McG sets him against Connor, who has to decide whether to trust him. Each wants the other to be the one he's been waiting for.
