The television in the Wetherly house cuts out mid-broadcast, and in Hamlin, a small town near San Francisco, the news arrives that bombs have fallen along the Eastern Seaboard. Carol Wetherly (Jane Alexander) is at home with her three children, and her husband Tom (William Devane) has not come back from work. Lynne Littman keeps the story inside one suburban household, where the radiation sickness is already spreading and every day costs the family more.
