Thalapathi

Surya (Rajinikanth) grew up in the slums and fights for the poor of his neighborhood, until he crosses paths with Deva (Mammootty), a powerful gangster who makes him his commander. Mani Ratnam sets their friendship against the rule of the district collector, Arjun (Arvind Swamy), who is determined to break Deva's hold. Surya takes the loyalty he is offered and gives it back in full, whatever it asks of him.
