“It's a serious problem for a lady with the hiccups, and he is it!”

In 1941 America, Jill Baker (Merle Oberon) is married to Larry (Melvyn Douglas), an insurance salesman, and the marriage has settled into a comfortable routine. Ernst Lubitsch follows her from the psychoanalyst's office to the apartment of Alexander Sebastian (Burgess Meredith), an eccentric pianist. Under the farce is a plain question about marriage, whether wanting a different life is the same as being unhappy with the one you have.
