Marcello Polletti (Marcello Mastroianni) has survived nine rounds of the Big Hunt, five as the hunter and four as the victim, and needs only one more kill to win fortune and fame. His tenth target is Caroline Meredith (Ursula Andress), a champion hunter on her ninth round. Elio Petri sets this near-future world, where the Hunt is the most popular entertainment on earth, as a way of keeping people with violent tendencies from starting wars.
