A woman with a knife in her back falls into Richard Hannay's (Robert Donat) bed, and the police at Scotland Yard are not inclined to believe his explanation. Alfred Hitchcock sends him north to the hills of Scotland, hunted for a murder he did not commit, chasing a spy ring called the 39 Steps. Ordinary people keep handing the wrong man to the law, and an innocent face is no protection.
