Newland Archer (Daniel Day-Lewis) is a young lawyer in 19th century New York, engaged to the proper May Welland (Winona Ryder) and comfortable with the life laid out for him. Then her cousin, Ellen Olenska (Michelle Pfeiffer), arrives, separated from her husband and quietly shunned by the families who dine together every week. Scorsese adapts Edith Wharton's novel, and Newland finds himself pulled toward the one person his world has decided not to forgive.
