The American President

“Why can't the most powerful man in the world have the one thing he wants most?”

President Andrew Shepherd (Michael Douglas) is a widower who runs the country and wants one thing he can't order up: a date with Sydney Ellen Wade (Annette Bening), an environmental lobbyist new to Washington. Rob Reiner, working from an Aaron Sorkin script, lets the courtship play out under the eyes of his staff, led by his friend A.J. MacInerney (Martin Sheen). Every dinner invitation turns into rumor, and his approval ratings take the hit.
