The Americanization of Emily

(1964)Directed by Arthur Hiller115 minComedy, Drama, Romance, War
“Why did Emily call Charlie the most immoral man she'd ever met?”

Lt. Commander Charles Madison (James Garner) is a naval aide in wartime London who procures whiskey and stockings for his admiral and wants nothing to do with heroism. Then Admiral Jessup (Melvyn Douglas) concocts a D-Day stunt that could get Charlie killed, just as he falls for Emily Barham (Julie Andrews), a British driver. Arthur Hiller shoots Paddy Chayefsky's talky script in black and white, giving each argument the room it needs.
