The Ape Woman

(1964)Directed by Marco Ferreri92 minDrama, Comedy

Antonio Semola (Ugo Tognazzi), a modest man in Naples, meets Maria (Annie Girardot), a young woman covered in excessive hair, and starts showing her at fairs. He marries her, and only afterward does a French manager arrive with a tempting offer. Ferreri, drawing on the real story of Julia Pastrana, a 19th-century woman exploited as a freak show attraction, films the whole business in flat, plain daylight.
