Howard Brubaker (Jack Lemmon) has just been promoted, and he is not especially happy about it, or about his marriage. At a loud company party he slips out early with Catherine Gunther (Catherine Deneuve), who turns out to be married to his boss, and director Stuart Rosenberg follows them through a night in New York. When she says she is leaving her husband for Paris, Howard asks to come along, with a wife and a new job waiting for him in the morning.
