“The City Under the City”

In a Midwestern city in 1950, Doc Erwin Riedenschneider (Sam Jaffe) walks out of prison with a plan for one big jewel heist. A crooked lawyer, Alonzo D. Emmerich (Louis Calhern), puts up the money, and John Huston follows the crew Doc pulls together from the city's veteran criminals. Among them is Dix Handley (Sterling Hayden), a hired hand with his own debts, who wants only enough cash to get back to a life he remembers.
