The Awakening of the Beast

“Coffin Joe's return in...”

A psychiatrist gives LSD to four volunteers, wanting to study the drug culture of the 1960s. What he gets is an unseen presence in the room with them, and a figure the film keeps pointing toward: Zé do Caixão (José Mojica Marins), the character the director invented and plays himself. Marins shoots it as a pseudodocumentary, so every hour of the experiment feels real, and the volunteers are left with nothing but their own minds to lose.
