“The coach is waiting for his next beer. The pitcher is waiting for her first bra. The team is waiting for a miracle. Consider the possibilities.”

Morris Buttermaker (Walter Matthau), an ex-minor league pitcher with a drinking problem, takes a few dollars to coach a Little League team and mostly wants to be left alone. His Bears are the worst kids in a fiercely competitive California league, and he needs a pitcher, so he turns to Amanda Whurlitzer (Tatum O'Neal). Michael Ritchie films the dugout and the dirt in grainy daylight, and the score borrows its themes from Bizet's Carmen.
