In a small Midwestern town in 1931, the Madison household has two daughters and one clear favorite. Marianne (Sidney Fox) is the pretty, restless one, who falls for the smooth-talking Valentine Corliss (Humphrey Bogart), while her plainer sister Laura (Bette Davis) quietly loves Dr. Lindley (Conrad Nagel), who only has eyes for Marianne. Hobart Henley fills the film with watchers, but Laura keeps loving where it does her no good.
