“A treasure to steal...a woman to win...a past to forget...”

Peter Van Hoek (Alan Ladd), called the Dutchman, walks out of the Yuma territorial prison in 1898 wanting gold, and wanting it from the mining town people who put him there unjustly. His fellow parolee John McBain (Ernest Borgnine) only wants to go straight. Delmer Daves keeps the planning talk practical and unhurried, and McBain finds the Dutchman's scheme harder to refuse than he expected.
